Formerly known as “Farmwell” (named after the property owned by George Lee III), Ashburn was a primarily rural area until the 1980s. AOL was headquartered in Ashburn in 1996. Today, the community is a hub of defense and technology entities, with seventy percent of the world’s internet traffic flowing through it and its neighbor Sterling. Ashburn is part of the Dulles Technology Corner, which was called “The Silicon Valley of the East” by Atlantic magazine. It is thirty miles northwest of Washington, D.C. and considered part of the Washington metro area.
