The community hosts a variety of celebrations year round. During the month of May, there is Friday Night Live! where free concerts are held every Friday from May through August. The Farmer’s Market is active from May through October. Other May celebrations include Towne Square Singers, Big Truck Days, Public Works Forest and Meadow Wildflower Walk. The Herndon festival occurs in June and is held for four days. For the fourth of July, there is a large celebration with fireworks display. The town had its beginnings in 1688 when King Charles II of England granted 5 million acres to Thomas Culpeper and part of the land became Herndon. In the 19th century, a mill was built along a stream near the intersection of what is now Elden and Locust Streets. The railroad depot was built in 1857 and it launched Herndon into further development. Today, Herndon is a vibrant community that has a variety of commercial and residential areas.
